Setting: Mystic Falls, Virginia is a colonial town that is supposed to be rich in history. There is a clear emphasis placed on how much history has happened in the town and how many members of founding families are still residents. (Though that number is seriously low these days.)

With a town square that holds events like Civil War Reenactments and the local Mayoral Family Estate holding every Miss Mystic Falls Pageant, it’s easy to say that Mystic Falls has a small town feeling that most people have experienced all of their life.

However, despite this cozy, everyone knows their neighbor feeling there is a lot that is left to the shadows and dark corners. From Secret Councils, to underground caves used for werewolf transformations (also slaves back in the day), to burning churches to the ground - Mystic Falls has its share of stories to tell.

Dating back to the arrival of Vikings who came hearing rumors of a native people living on the land and never being sick or having to worry about death, the true history of the small town began with Werewolves, Witches, and Vampires (and a hybrid). From that story carved on the wall, Mystic Falls enjoys over a thousand years of vampires, werewolves, and the humans that hunt them.

The Vampire Diaries takes us into that world in the present day where vampires return to town looking for answers to familiar faces. It steeps in mystical romance and issues of agency all while trying to remain “just a show about teenage vampires in love” for those that want to pretend that each episode doesn’t emotionally compromise them in some way.

While the amount of time that passes between episodes and seasons is a bit shaky, The Vampire Diaries takes place in the late 2000s to early 2010s. It uses the small town standards, with high school as the average everyday backdrop for all of the crazy vampire shenanigans. Each season introduces more lore and more backstory to how these creatures came to be and what sort of new creatures surround them.

History:

  • Adoptive Tragic Backstory: Acquired

Hayley is born into the werewolf genetics. Her parents unable or unwilling to raise her, give her up for adoption and she is raised completely unaware of her true parentage. She is born with a crescent shaped birthmark on her back - which is said to give a clue to her parentage, but Hayley will remain unaware of this fact until it is brought to light by Klaus - the Original Hybrid.

At some point after the age of 18, Hayley is having fun on a boat with her friends while under the influence. Believing she was sober enough for this sort of activity, she doesn’t see anything wrong with her actions until one of her friends dies due to her negligence. This death at her hands activates the curse of the werewolf, something that Hayley was not even aware existed.

Her first transformation happens in the home of her adopted parents. With their living room destroyed, they kick her out. Trying to sort out what happened to her and to find answers, Hayley starts to stay with different packs through the country. She learns what she can from them and makes connections. Never staying in one place for very long, she becomes extremely nomadic in nature.

  • 12 Unsired Hybrids: Requested

One of the connections she makes at some point is with Professor Atticus Shane. Due to his extensive knowledge on werewolves, vampires, and other mystical creatures it’s possible that she learns how to break the sire bond from him. (However there is nothing in canon to prove this. The only thing that is said about the sire bond and breaking it is that Hayley knew how to do it before Tyler arrived and found her.) She strikes a deal with Professor Shane that she will deliver to him 12 unsired Hybrids in exchange for all the information that he has on her biological parents.

Hayley finds Tyler and follows him through the Appalachian mountains teaching him how to break his sire bond. She provides the means to do this as well as the moral support and encouragement for him to continue through it. During this time, Tyler tells her that he is from Florida (using his uncle Mason’s last location as a resource for accuracy) and does not let her know that he’s from an affluent family. There is a chance that she knew all of this already, as Tyler was the first successful Hybrid that was created by Klaus and this news possibly spread through the werewolf community - especially once Klaus started to create more Hybrids.

After Tyler returns to Mystic Falls, Hayley continues to keep in touch with other packs. With her knowledge of how to break the sire bond she makes herself into a useful ally for other packs and information is given to her easily because they trust her.

One of these werewolves is Chris. Hayley claims he’s from a pack she used to run with and that he told her he was going to Mystic Falls to babysit a Hybrid named Tyler. Hayley informs Tyler that she didn’t feel it was a coincidence and headed to check it out for herself. She joked around with Tyler, expressing how he lied to her and how she didn’t think he was loaded. Intending to stick around she requested Tyler pour her some “Rich Person Scotch” and wandered around the Lockwood Estate, learning the real story of Tyler.

Of course, during her sipping of scotch, she meets Klaus. She is not impressed. She even goes to tell him how not impressed she is by him. Klaus opts to draw his own conclusion about the nature of her relationship with Tyler and jumps to the conclusion that she is the secret werewolf lover from the mountains. With this opinion formed, he plans to use this to hold weight over Tyler’s head and regain some of his lost control. Hayley is still not impressed.

When Hayley meets Caroline for the first time it’s in the midst of other things happening that are more important to her. She dismisses Caroline and her concerns by expressing that she doesn’t have time for teenage angst. Eavesdropping on Tyler and Dean’s discussions, Hayley interrupts and tries to convince Dean that there is another way, that he doesn’t have to follow Klaus’ orders. Dean explains that being Sired means he can’t just say no and Tyler wants to prove that breaking the sire bond can work. Hayley watches as Tyler calls Klaus, but Tyler is blackmailed by Klaus. Tyler backs down from Klaus in keeping up with the ruse that him and Hayley were more than friends.

Dean follows through with the orders, but they get him killed. Caroline confronts Tyler about Hayley and their relationship, which he denies and when questioned why he would allow Klaus to believe it, Tyler reveals Hayley and his master plan to unsire the Hybrids.

Later that night, Hayley and the remaining Hybrids drink to honor Dean. The next morning continuing with the fake-too close for comfort status of their relationship, Hayley creates a display of slight affection to Tyler by cleaning off something off of his lip with her thumb, knowing that Klaus is a creeper and is watching this play out. The following day, they take it one step further by having Caroline and Tyler fake a break-up.

With the over dramatic break-up giving Klaus his pie in the sky dream of getting with Caroline, he’ll be properly distracted. Klaus leaves and all parties involved are pleased with the way it played out. Even Hayley admits to believing the break-up argument from Caroline and Tyler. Tyler confesses that the two girls are great liars and then moves to kiss Caroline. Hayley once again... is not impressed. Actually, she looks a bit jealous, but that can also be because she’s not impressed that she’s doing all of this work and Tyler still gets the girl.

With the Lockwood Estate being the current resting place of the most Sired Hybrids in one place, Hayley is taking the chance to meet her end of her deal with Professor Shane and starts to help Tyler break the sire bonds that the Hybrids at the estate have.

They start with Chris and their timing and selection could not have been more perfect. Chris is the Hybrid that is chosen to watch over Elena after she kills the Hunter. Elena having been kidnapped by Klaus earlier that day. They all construct a plan and Chris, who is the first unsired has to go along with all of Klaus’ demands but it proves to be more annoying than he anticipated. As Hayley and Tyler back up the plan they promise to stand by Chris, they promise to get him safe and clear.

Chris does what he’s supposed to do and when Klaus finds out that it was Chris that failed him, he shows up to threaten him. Tyler and Hayley both stick to their promises of having his back. Tyler claims it is his fault Elena got away and then Hayley steps up taking the blame for everything. She does this knowing that she can’t lose one of her 12 hybrids that she needs for Shane. She tells Klaus that if he is going to kill someone that he can kill her, because she’d rather die than become one of his ‘sired bitches’.

Despite everything going to shit, Klaus doesn’t kill Chris. Tyler believes Chris will be free and Hayley believes she’ll have one of her 12 hybrids to give to Shane. Before either plan gets to follow through - Jeremy and Stefan enter the estate and kill Chris in order to grow Jeremy’s Hunter’s Mark so that it can end the curse of the Hunter that is plaguing Elena. They do this in front of Tyler and Hayley - which Hayley cowers away from watching.

Part of Mystic Falls is the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. Caroline is keeping up appearances and agrees to attend the event with Klaus. Hayley is helping motivate one of the hybrids during her repetitive turning. As the girl breaks every bone in her body, Tyler informs Hayley that Caroline has bought them another day. While she’s pleased to hear this, she’s also wanting to go “maintain” the lie that they are the reason Caroline and Tyler aren’t together. Their discussion annoys the turning Hybrid, but they decide to go only to maintain those appearances.

They arrive at the Lockwood Estate together, Hayley having a good time already because she’s at a party. She mocks the entrants and tries to get Tyler to enjoy himself while he can. She socializes with Professor Shane, which draws the attention of some of the more suspicious pageant attendees, especially those named Damon.

Tyler and Hayley take a moment to sit and chat during the post-crowning events and she confides in him how she was triggered along with her story of her adoptive parents kicking her out. Tyler inquires about her “chatting up the old people” namely his mom and Professor Shane, since Damon had asked. Hayley deflects very well and explains that Professor Shane is 30 and hot and smart. She tells Tyler that she just met him today.

Later that evening, Hayley is meeting with Professor Shane and she received a text message from Tyler that Kim is free from her sire bond. She informs the Professor that they have another one and she tries to lay down a condition on their agreement. She tries to keep Tyler out of the agreement and Shane says that they’ll discuss it when she has the 12.

As the final Hybrids are breaking their sire bonds, dissent begins to form in the ranks. Kim tries to stop the current breaking, by claiming that the point of breaking the bond is to have free will. Hayley and Tyler try to convince her that he needs to continue, but Kim refuses to let it happen. Hayley is frustrated that Tyler let them leave, because she is running out of Hybrids to break their sire bond and by letting sired Hybrids near Klaus runs the risk of them telling Klaus of their plan.

Worried that the final hybrid won’t break their sire bond, she ransacks Professor Shane’s office, trying to find his information about her family. He tries to tell her that they already have twelve, but she re-insists that Tyler is not part of the deal and they only have 11. He reaffirms their original deal - 12 unsired hybrids and she gets all the information on her biological parents.

Refocused on her end game and goal of twelve hybrids, she goes to Tyler and tells him that Kim is challenging his leadership and that they are a pack and that they need an Alpha. She pushes at Tyler until he tells Adrian and Kim that they’re going to return to the stable tomorrow and that they’re going to break Adrian’s bond. Adrian and Kim leave the bar, but they don’t go to the stable. Instead, they go to grab Caroline in order to try and prove that they’re in control with Tyler.

Hayley is upset and demands that Tyler fix it, but she isn’t witness to when Tyler takes control of the pack. The following morning, she’s back in Shane’s office. She informs him that he has twelve and he tells her that her parents are dead. She accuses him of lying to her, but he says that he told her he’d tell her where to find them. She is frustrated and threatens him, but he instead uses her anger to position himself in a better light by explaining to her the power of Silas and what he plans on doing by bringing him back to life.

  • New Orders: Received

Unfortunately for everyone, Hayley believes this and is so desperate to find her parents that she agrees to go along with the plan. Of course, the plan doesn’t involve bricking Klaus in Rebekah’s body and with the proposed change being so amazing and Caroline saving the day. Panicked that the original plan is now being altered, Hayley tries to gain guidance from Shane, but he only tells her to fix it. SInce she knows that if they don’t use Tyler for the new vessel for Klaus that the unsired Hybrids will actually have support and will likely be able to get out of Mystic Falls, she improvises. She needs the 12 unsired to die, so she snaps Caroline’s neck and betrays Tyler’s trust by telling Klaus what he’s done.

While Klaus kills the unsired Hybrids who had all planned on escaping, Hayley goes to Tyler to explain what she’s done. There aren’t huge details revealed, but she tells him that she made a deal with someone else to find her real parents and how the price for that was his 12 unsired hybrids. She also says that now Klaus is going to be out for revenge. She tells him that he should leave town and then flees herself.

  • Alliances: Shaky at Best

Hayley runs to New Orleans, a place where her family had origins. All the information that Shane gave her would have led her there. New Orleans is also where Hayley crosses paths with Katherine Pierce. Since Katherine has successfully hidden from Klaus for over 500 years, the chance to strike another deal is far too easy. Katherine wants information about Silas and Hayley wants to find her parents. Katherine does what she always does and says she can help, but is only out for herself. Hayley tells Katherine everything she can, but once Katherine is done with Hayley and has what she needs, she sends a vampire to kill her.

As Hayley is trying to stay one step ahead of the vampire, she tries to call in a favor from Klaus. She knows that he’s looking for Katherine and at this point in time she’s just grabbing at whatever she can get a hold on so that she stays alive.

Klaus attacks the vampire, biting him and sentencing him to a suffering death, then takes Hayley back to his estate. He offers her protection in exchange for information on where Katerina (Katherine) is. She says that she doesn’t know where she is, but Klaus is persistent. She looks at his art and gives him her honest opinion on it all being not good (save for one piece). She disarms his usual charms by calling him out on his tactics of talking about his childhood and softening up the girls.

Just when they were slightly getting along, she brings up his choice to hunt her friend Tyler for the next century. She expresses that even though he talks a big game he is the one that let her go, something she believes he did to make sure that Caroline didn’t hate him. Klaus replies that he’s doing it because he feels Tyler’s mindset of always being chased is the real torture/punishment. He brings up any latent feelings that he suspected Hayley had over Tyler, but when she refutes his claim with a joke he thinks she’s proving her strength and hopes that Tyler has some of that within himself.

Hayley explains that the reason she survived all this time is because she has a network of allies and friends. She’s spent most of her time searching for her parents, so the packs and people she has met along the way help her. The same way Katherine has people who will do anything for her up to sending an assassin after a loose end. She implies that she might know some of these allies - thus proving her worth to Klaus once more.

When Klaus gets a call from Rebekah telling him that the vampire assassin has been dealt with he relays the information to Hayley and tells her she is free to go -- or stay. She suggests that she stays and she could tell Klaus more of Katherine’s secrets and he could do something for her. When he says that she will never convince him to let Tyler go free, she counters that it means she’ll never have her chance with Tyler and he’ll never have his chance with Caroline.

Her honesty upsets Klaus and he turns to leave her.

Then she wakes up on the TQ.

  • Personality:

When looking at the type of person Hayley is, the easiest thing to say is that she’s determined with a nice streak of manipulation. From the moment she learns she’s a werewolf, she puts all of her focus and energy into trying to discover where she came from. She travels and seeks out other packs of werewolves. She makes connections and tries to find anyone that can help her learn anything she can about her biological parents. By aligning herself with Shane, she is willing to lie to other members of the packs she has just spent years meeting and spending time with just for the chance at finding her parents. Her determination in finding this information makes her a bit blind to the danger of it, but the reckless side of her doesn’t seem to care how dangerous it gets.

She pushes at people instead of trying to do things on her own, relying on the strengths and abilities of others to accomplish greater things. When we first meet Hayley it’s with a smile and a story about how she’s the reason Tyler broke his sire-bond. It’s not something she brags about, but instead she uses that information to position Tyler as a potential leader. While this is also in part to how she has an arrangement with Shane, this is something she’s learned through her years of being with different packs. While searching for her parents, Hayley also learned about as much about werewolves as one can in that time. Bouncing from pack to pack for short bursts of time allowed her to view those pack dynamics and see moments where challenges arose and how they were dealt with. When Kimberly threatens the plan and puts the rest of the hybrids (and Tyler) at risk, Hayley explains that Tyler is an alpha and that he needs to take control of his pack. She’s positioning herself to not only be a friend to Tyler, but someone that can provide guidance and advice. It’s her expertise that he can rely on and it’s why her plan to put Klaus into Tyler is so easily accepted by him.

She’s easy to trust too. Her looks and soft southern accent (that hits harder when she’s upset) make her not exactly suspicious looking. She tells Tyler straight to his face that she doesn’t know Shane before the Miss Mystic Falls pageant and that she only spoke with him because he’s handsome and smart. In truth, she’s been speaking to Shane for months before this event and is in way over her head with his plan to raise Silas. She doesn’t lie to be mean or to betray the trust of those she relies on, she does it out of need and her own desire to keep those connections in tack. She knows that if she told Tyler that she knew Shane before that there would be far too many questions that would be asked and that it would risk not only her relationship with Tyler but her deal with Shane. She’s always going to look out for her goal of finding her parents.

In fact, all of her desires are related to her family. Her seeking out a pack, of trying to be supportive to Tyler are all traits that come when you have family. Because she comes from an adoptive family, she also has a better idea of how blood isn’t required for that sort of bond. She puts her neck out on the line for family more than once. While her reasons are still always more toward her own goals, she still takes that risk without knowing the end result. When Chris is being blamed for letting Elena go and Klaus is threatening to kill him, Hayley takes the blame herself and stands up to Klaus - something not many in her position would have done. She challenges him to kill her, because she is someone that definitely acts before she thinks.

That impulsive side of Hayley gets her into trouble more times than she probably realizes and the reason she doesn’t realize it is because by the time she needs to properly react there is a new situation to deal with. Most of her impulses end up being more on the side of saying what’s on her mind instead of thinking about how it will impact the other person. She tells Caroline that she’s friends with Tyler, is staying at his house, and that she doesn’t have time for her ‘teen drama’. In fact, most of her relationships with other women tends to be on the adversarial side. This mostly comes from the fact that she is the one that helped Tyler and that sort of ability to be able to stand up to a werewolf/vampire hybrid that is shouting and threatening you with every break of their bone is not for the delicate.

She can give back as easily as she can be given. While Kimberly is breaking her sire bond, screaming in pain and being vocal about how she can hurt the “wolf girl”, Hayley barks right back at her, not afraid of whatever the hybrid might do to her. (Sure she’s chained up, but I think Hayley would still be just as ballsy.) She stands up to Klaus, she pushes Tyler to take control of his pack, she even tries to stand her ground when Klaus orders Dean to go into the hostage situation at the Grill. In fact, the only time she seems to falter is when she feels like her chance at her real parents is at risk. Even in those moments, Hayley will charge forward and act on impulse. Rather than look for different options than the plan Shane has, she just goes to Klaus and exposes the plan. It puts her in harms way, but she feels like she’s done what was needed.

Most of the times where she does push back even at the risk to her own plan it’s usually to protect that plan completely. The manipulative streak that she has within her is something that doesn’t come out all the time, but she definitely wields it to her advantage. She positions Tyler to be the leader of the hybrids. Even when she is talking to Klaus after he saved her from the vampire assassin, she uses her words to ensure that he knows where she stands and how very little leeway she’s going to give him. And yet he still protects her and still sees her as valued in that moment. She uses her friendship with Tyler, she uses her knowledge about unsiring hybrids, she uses anything she possibly can in order to further her own agenda, but she always keeps herself behind the larger immovable object/person so that she’s protected from the risk that she takes.

That doesn’t mean she isn’t tough, though. She’s still a werewolf. Still someone that once a month goes through excruciating pain and then has to fight against her own nature to not kill. She has to be willing to chain herself up to protect herself and others if it’s required. She’s been on her own since her first transformation too, having been kicked out by her parents. She’s built up that thick skin and it’s also a lot of hanging around guys that has shaped a lot of her mannerisms and intolerance to the usual girl-trouble drama/bullshit.

She’s a no-frills girl that knows how to wear a bodycon dress, not because she wants to wear it, but because she knows how she looks in it and she knows what sort of appearance it presents. When she is meant to be implying she’s in a less than okay relationship with Tyler, she doesn’t go for the PDA and the overly girlfriend behavior. Even when she’s with Klaus it’s a very take-charge type attitude that she has. She invades personal space, calls it like she sees it, and sees through most charming anecdotes. When Klaus tries to explain to her the deepness of his art, she laughs it off and calls him on trying to soften her up with the woes and troubles of his life as an Original.

Deep down, Hayley does still seek out that sense of belonging that most younger adults do, but hers has become part of her mission and tied more to her identity as a part of a family of werewolves than of wanting to be part of a pack or a group of friends. She’s willing to put others on the line to save herself and she’s willing to back a play to the very end - no matter the risk to herself. She sees the potential in situations, but doesn’t always have the foresight to see all the possible end results. She sees one path and sticks to it, no matter where it takes her, because her eye is always on what she wants to get, not if there are other ways to get it.

She’s a werewolf girl that has spent most of her time as a werewolf trying to find answers and when she finally gets an answer, it’s not enough because all she’s done is search and to find out that the reward has been taken away is too much and she denies that as being what she wanted. She goes out looking for more, trying to keep that search going, because she still feels like she’s owed something after everything she’s done.

    Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

Haley is a werewolf from the Vampire Diaries canon. This means she has a full transformation to a wolf that lasts a shortened amount of time, during the full moon. It is a painful process that amounts to breaking every single bone in her body in order to form the wolf skeleton. Her facial features elongate, eyes turn a golden/ochre color, and her teeth grow to canine standards. For all intent purposes she shifts into a very large, powerful wolf. It is more wolf-like than monster-like.

Even when not in a wolf form or during a full moon she has increased healing and senses (including taste). She has an increased sexual appetite and is more prone to take high-risk situations due to her abilities giving her advantages.

She has increased strength - though when she is not in full werewolf state, she is not as strong as a vampire. Increased agility, durability, and speed all factor into their survival when they are not fully shifted. This also allows them to withstand the pain of the shift and not die from it.

All of these abilities, even when in human form, are increased during the full moon. They have also been shown to use their anger and hostility to bolster their abilities when the full moon isn’t near. These abilities also lend to other things - such as being able to tell when someone is lying. Heartbeats and being able to quickly view the smallest details could explain why they are able to see a lie.

Werewolves create a venom that is stored within their upper gums. This venom/toxin is lethal in any dose to a vampire. If a werewolf bites a vampire and this toxin/venom is released into the bite the vampire will go through a horrible process toward death. The site of the bite festers and grows extremely quickly. It almost looks like the skin is rotting away. The toxin/venom works its way through the vampire until they are hallucinating, going mad, and nearly suicidal. Vampire that are suffering from this sort of bite - in general have been healed or have another vampire kill them so that the suffering can stop. The blood of the Original Hybrid so far is the only cure that has been seen in canon.

Werewolves in Vampire Diaries canon allow for the following means of subduing:

Wolfsbane is toxic to a werewolf. It usually burns on contact, but in canon they have shown Mason and Tyler both ingesting wolfsbane in order to try and control the wolf further, to weaken it so that their transformation doesn’t last as long.

Decapitation, removal of their heart - are means of killing a werewolf.

Witches have been able to use magic to temporarily put a werewolf to the ground. The method requires creating multiple aneurysms, causing severe pain - though not killing the werewolf as they can heal.

There have also been devices that harm supernatural creatures. In season 1 the Gilbert Device when assembled and activated creates an audible frequency that both Mayor Lockwood and Tyler hear and are hurt by. Tyler crashes the car he’s driving and Mayor Lockwood ends up locked up with vampires and burns in the fire.

Hayley stands at 5’ 10” and is of a slender build. Not overly muscular, she gains most of her strength from her werewolf attributes. Her hair is brunette, layered, and falls to just above the middle of her back. Most of her clothing has an earthy feel to it. Layered and light shirts, a boho chic style. The only time she wears something flashy is when she goes to the pageant as Tyler’s “Date”. Her make-up pallette is in general neutral tones with an occasional deep color to her lips.

    Noticeable markings:

+ 1 Moon Tattoo against her ribcage - just at the bra-band on her right side [image]

+ 1 Moon shaped birthmark - high in the middle of her shoulder on her right side [image]

    Werewolf form:

While we haven’t seen Hayley’s transformation in canon, she would take on the same attributes as the rest of the werewolves from The Vampire Diaries. Her eyes would shift to an ochre color, bones breaking to reform the correct skeleton, hair would grow over the body, teeth would elongate to canine standards, and she would become more canine in appearance than werewolves of other mythos. Their general mass does not alter from their human form (they don’t shrink) so when they are in their full wolf form they are generally larger than the Grey Wolves that one would find in the wild.

Age: 20-21 ( There is no canon information on this, but her adoptive parents kicked her out after her first transformation, which means she was at least 18 otherwise the system would’ve gotten involved again. Also her remark that she "doesn't do teen drama" gives me the feeling that she's not a teenager. )

    Log Sample:

The bar is nearly empty at this hour. Just the stragglers trying to decide if they can stomach food or if they’d rather just play it safe with coffee. Hayley’s fingertips curl against the bottom of her seat, shoulders leaning forward as her back curved. Her eyes stay on the doorway, waiting to see if they come through, if the ad she placed could actually work. It’s futile she figures. All the other times she’s just went looking for someone that gave up a child around the time she was born haven’t exactly given her much. One time it gave her a real creep trying to look down her shirt, but that gave him a broken wrist. Hospital staff is just her next name on the list.

Exhaling, she sits up straighter. The impression of good posture that she knows lasts only a few minutes before she’s slouching again. There’s effort made on her end, trying to sit up straighter for a bit longer than she wants to, but the longer she waits the less she wants to sit still.

It makes her anxious. Waiting for someone else. She doesn’t do well with just sitting around and waiting for things. The waitress comes over and Hayley offers her a smile, “Just the coffee is -- actually, do you have pie?”

    ”Apple or peach?”

Smiling a bit more, she smirks, “Apple’ll be good. Thanks.”

The waitress moves away from the table and a guy comes in. He seems shifty. Something about him doesn’t seem quite right. Lifting her chin, she watches him, wondering if he’s the guy. He catches her eye and moves toward her table. It’s too early for a customer she convinces herself. He’s older than a college guy trying to pick her up.

    ”You Hayley?”

She sucks in a breath, “Yeah, you’re Mitch?” The phone call had been brief, which should’ve been her first sign that something was wrong, but she’s still hopeful. He sits down across from her and she’s trying to see if he’s gonna stick it out. Either way, she reaches into her back pocket and pulls out the drawing of her birthmark.

“This. Have you seen this before?” Her finger taps to the drawing. She doesn’t want to dilly dally about anything else. Klaus said it had ties to her family and that the bloodline had lineage or a long line. It’s all she cares about right now. “Look at it really close. It’s a birthmark. You’ve worked in the hospitals in this city for years, right? You’ve seen this on anyone else? Any babies?”

The waitress brings her pie by and slides it across the table. Mitch eases back, avoiding eye contact with the waitress and with Hayley herself. Her fingers move the pie aside the second the waitress leaves. “You’ve seen it, haven’t you.” She doesn’t ask it, she states it.

”No. Never.” He shakes his head and pushes the paper away from himself. It’s too many moments of denial for her. She doesn’t like that at all.

“You’re lying.” She can hear his heartbeat, the little up-tick that happens. When she protests his answer he gets up quickly. “See, now I know you’re lying.”

”No, I’m not. I just - you’re not the first to ask. I -- I need to go.” He moves to the door and she thinks about stopping him, but she’s got nothing else to ask him. She knows who would be asking, it’s ridiculous that she’s following breadcrumbs left by the guy that gave her the first real hint as to who she is.

Exhaling, she slouches in her seat. Glancing to her pie she pushes it with her hand until it was back in the middle of the table. “At least, I got pie.”

[Green eyes are close to the feed for a moment before the pull back, her focus drawing sharply as she returns her hand to the glass. She takes a sip, keeping her hold on her drink.]

These aren't like the reality show confessionals, but I bet people could treat them like them. Talk about the person you want to kick off the ship. The ones that piss you off. Backstabbing. Betrayal. Those are those hot topics that the viewers like.

[Her eyes wander around her room, then return to the camera.] That and mysterious pasts.

[She smirks, taking another sip of her drink.]

I can tell you from personal experience - those stories are hardly worth the time. [She exhales a laugh.]

I bet no one can even remember all the contestants on the first season of the Bachelor. [She knows she got off topic, not that it was actual topic.]

So, if you don't use these for confessionals and all the answers are given by a guy who looks like he is really tired of making coffee... what else is there?
