[ he misses their daughter too. it's an unending ache, an empty place in his heart. he thinks too, of going home, and the only incentive that stops him is the impracticality of letting his selfishness cloud what is truly in service of his daughter: accomplishing what he's set out to do for her here.

it aches too; to think of hayley. perhaps it's why he did not answer her thanks before but why he offers this gesture and those words to her now: he misses hayley too. he longs for the comfort of knowing he does not suffer alone. that they both miss her. that they both want only what's best for her. they want to see her grow up, and grow up happy and safe, surrounded by them and by family. that is all that matters.

there is only one person who understands and feels as he does, and it's hayley. ]
